How to keep your dashboard from bubbling in the Florida sun

Park in the South Florida sun and the top of your dashboard can climb well past 150°F. Leather and the glue under it do not love that. Here is why dashboards bubble, how to spot it early, and the habits that keep yours flat and tight.

In short
  • Heat dries the leather so it shrinks, and wears out the glue under it. Together they pull it loose and out of the vents.
  • Shade is the biggest single help: a fitted sunshade, every time.
  • Catch it early: a small lift is far easier to deal with than a whole panel.

Why it happens

The leather on a dashboard is glued over foam on a hard base. It is sewn tight at the seams, and at the edges it wraps into the air vents. It is never just one thing. Every hot day dries the leather a little, and dry leather shrinks. The same heat slowly wears out the glue under it. And the seams do not move, so the shrinking leather pulls against them. Together they win: the leather lets go where the dashboard steps down or curves, which is the lift or bubble you see, and pulls out of the vents, often by 3 to 4 cm, so the padding shows.

Habits that keep it flat

  1. Shade first. Park in a garage or in the shade when you can, and use a fitted sunshade every single time. It makes the biggest difference of anything on this list.
  2. Tint the glass. A quality ceramic film keeps a lot of heat out of the cabin. Check the Florida rules for the front side windows before you choose a shade.
  3. Let the heat out. Crack the windows slightly when it is safe, or use remote ventilation if your car has it.
  4. Keep the leather clean and fed. Wipe dust off with a damp microfiber, and use a water-based leather conditioner with UV protection a few times a year.
  5. Skip the shine. Silicone dressings add glare on the windshield and attract dust. A matte finish is the factory look anyway.

Early signs to watch for

Look for

  • Leather pulling back from a vent or an edge
  • Small raised spots near the windshield
  • A soft, hollow feel when you press the top

Then

  • Keep it shaded and out of direct sun
  • Do not press or try to glue it yourself
  • Send us a photo early
