How to clean Alcantara without ruining it
Alcantara feels great and marks easily. Skin oil flattens the soft pile on the steering wheel and armrests, and the wrong cleaner leaves water rings or hard, shiny spots. The good news: a gentle routine keeps it soft for years. This is the one we use in the shop.
- Use water or a cleaner made for Alcantara, on a towel, never sprayed straight on.
- Wipe gently, let it dry on its own, then brush the pile back up.
- Never use leather conditioner, alcohol or household cleaners on it.

What you need
A soft brush (a suede brush or a soft horsehair brush), two clean microfiber towels, a spray bottle with clean water, and a mild cleaner made for Alcantara or microsuede. If you do not have one, a few drops of pH-neutral soap in water will do. A vacuum with a soft brush head helps too.
Step by step
- Vacuum first. Use the soft brush head to lift dust and crumbs out of the pile.
- Dampen the towel, not the material. Mist the microfiber lightly. Alcantara should never get wet through.
- Wipe in one direction with light pressure. Turn the towel to a clean side often.
- Greasy spots (steering wheel, shifter, armrests): put a little cleaner on the towel, work it in gently, then wipe again with a towel dampened with clean water.
- Let it dry on its own. No heat gun, no hair dryer, no direct sun.
- Brush the pile up once it is dry, with small light circles. This brings back the soft, even look.
Do
- Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first
- Wipe touch points every two to four weeks
- Keep a clean towel only for Alcantara
Avoid
- Soaking it or spraying cleaner straight on
- Alcohol, degreasers, all-purpose cleaners
- Leather conditioner: it clogs the fibers
- Stiff brushes and hard scrubbing
How often
A light wipe of the parts you touch every two to four weeks, and a full clean every few months. Cars that see a lot of driving or hot, sweaty hands need it more often.
