Alcantara vs. leather steering wheel: which should you pick?

Short answer: if you like how Alcantara feels in your hands, choose an Alcantara steering wheel. It asks for one thing: cleaning at least once every two to three months with a cleaner made for Alcantara. Skip that, and the grips go greasy within about a year. A leather steering wheel is the classic for those who would rather just wipe it now and then.

People very often can't decide between leather and Alcantara on the steering wheel. Many of them like Alcantara, and then step back. Why? Because they've seen plenty of Alcantara wheels that went greasy and shiny, and nobody wants that in their car. The problem is real. But from what I see in our shop every day, it has one simple fix, and I'll get to it.

What is Alcantara, and where did it come from?

Alcantara looks like suede, but there is no leather in it. It's a microfiber made of polyester and polyurethane, and it was born in Japan. In the late 1960s Miyoshi Okamoto, a chemist at the Japanese company Toray, was working on a material that would feel like calfskin. He wanted it for shoes.

In 1972 Toray teamed up with the Italian company ENI, and the material got an Italian home. Later it got its name, from the Arabic al-qantara, "the bridge". The company's CEO once called it a bridge between two cultures, Japanese and Italian. It is still made at one factory, in Umbria. The fibers are so thin that, by the company's own count, 90 kilometers of them weigh about one gram. Try to picture that.

Cars found it in 1974, in the Lamborghini Bravo concept by Bertone. The first production car with it was the Lancia Stratos HF, the rally legend. When SpaceX showed the inside of its Crew Dragon capsule in 2015, the seats were carbon fiber and Alcantara.

Leather has a shoe story too. Nappa, the word you see on so many luxury car spec sheets, comes from Napa, California. In the 1870s a tanner there, Emanuel Manasse, worked out a new way to tan leather, and it was sold as "Nap-a-tan", for shoes. So both materials on your steering wheel started life on someone's feet.

Not every suede steering wheel is Alcantara

Alcantara is a registered brand. Carmakers use other microfibers too: Porsche trims the wheels of its GT cars in its own Race-Tex, and Mercedes-AMG has used DINAMICA. Those are serious factory materials. The cheap "Alcantara-like" fabric sold online is another story. Every piece of it we've had in our hands faded in the sun and wore out faster. Genuine Alcantara cleans well, so it's the only Alcantara we use.

Why people choose Alcantara on the steering wheel

First, the feel. Alcantara is soft and matte, it holds your hands well while the fibers are clean, and the wheel looks like it came out of a race car. BMW fits an Alcantara wheel as standard on its most track-focused M cars, the M4 CS and M4 CSL.

Second, the sun. Matte fiber doesn't flash in your eyes on a bright afternoon. And here in Florida, a black leather wheel in a car parked outside gets so hot that you drive the first few minutes with two fingers. Alcantara stays noticeably cooler to the touch.

Why Alcantara steering wheels get shiny at 9 and 3

Let's do simple math. Drive one hour a day, and that's about 365 hours a year with your hands on the same two spots of the rim, at 9 and 3 o'clock. Everything on your hands ends up there: sweat, hand cream, dust. And here in Miami, a LOT of sunscreen.

On leather most of it stays on the surface. Alcantara is made of fibers, so the oil soaks in, glues them flat, and the grips turn dark and shiny. Mercedes-Benz even put out a service bulletin about it in 2017: heavy wear on AMG Performance wheels in microfiber or Alcantara, caused by "dust, grease, sweat". The fix was cleaning, and Mercedes noted that it can't be billed to the warranty. In other words, it's the owner's job.

How to keep an Alcantara steering wheel looking new

Here is the simple fix I promised. Clean the wheel at least once every two to three months with a cleaner made for Alcantara. That's all. How to clean Alcantara has its own article.

Skip it, and within about a year the grips look greasy and feel unpleasant in the hand. Keep it clean, and in my experience nothing happens to Alcantara at all. It doesn't wear through, it doesn't fade in the sun, it doesn't lose its color. By its properties it may even outlast leather.

Once the fibers do wear through, cleaning won't help anymore. One wheel from our before-and-after photos came in exactly like that: grey Alcantara, shiny at the grips and torn at the spokes. It left in red leather, with the carbon kept.

Why people choose a leather steering wheel

Leather is the classic. It's smooth and warm in the hand, it matches the seats and the dashboard, and the daily care is a damp cloth. If you'd rather not think about your steering wheel at all, that counts for a lot.

Leather wears too. A leather wheel has a thin protective coating on top, and Mazda listed what breaks it down in a 2023 service bulletin: perfume, hand cream, sunscreen, wet wipes, sweat and skin oil. Rings and watches scratch it. Over the years the grips go shiny and slippery, and then the leather starts to peel. Same hours, same hands.

And done right, a leather wheel is real handwork. Bentley says one steering wheel for its Flying Spur takes three and a half hours to stitch by hand: 168 cross stitches through 352 holes, with two needles at once. That is the work we do at our bench every day, with the stitch matched to your car or in a color you pick.

Leather or Alcantara: which one should you choose?

Here is what I always tell people. If you like how Alcantara feels, take Alcantara. Just know from day one that it needs cleaning at least once every two to three months. That is the only catch.

If you don't want to think about the wheel at all, take leather and wipe it with a damp cloth now and then.

And if you can't decide, take both. Every part of the rim can take its own material and color, for example Alcantara on the grips and leather on the top and bottom. You can add a zero mark at 12 o'clock too. Racers started putting a strip of tape at the top of the wheel so they always knew where straight ahead was, an idea often credited to Mark Donohue.

Let's sum up

Most people who are afraid of Alcantara have seen it greasy. That problem is real, and it is solved by cleaning the wheel at least once every two to three months. Cared for, Alcantara doesn't wear through and doesn't fade. Leather is the classic for those who would rather wipe it and forget. Choose the one you like in your hands.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alcantara or leather better for a steering wheel?

If you like how Alcantara feels, choose Alcantara. Cleaned at least once every two to three months with a cleaner made for Alcantara, it doesn't wear through or fade, and it can outlast leather. Leather suits owners who would rather just wipe the wheel now and then. Many owners combine the two on one wheel.

How often should you clean an Alcantara steering wheel?

At least once every two to three months, with a cleaner made for Alcantara. Left alone, the grips usually go greasy within about a year.

Why does an Alcantara steering wheel get shiny?

Skin oil, sweat, sunscreen and dust soak into the fibers where you hold the wheel and press them flat. Most of that shine is dirt, and regular cleaning brings the grips back. When the fibers are torn or worn through, the wheel needs new Alcantara or leather.

Is Alcantara real leather?

No. Alcantara is a microfiber made of polyester and polyurethane, invented in Japan and made in Italy. The name is a registered brand. Carmakers also use similar microfibers under their own names, such as Porsche's Race-Tex.

Can one steering wheel have both leather and Alcantara?

Yes. The top, the bottom, the grips and the airbag cover can each take their own material and color. A common mix is Alcantara on the grips and leather on the top and bottom.

Steering wheel rewrap in Miami, or by mail

Leather and Alcantara are what we work with every day at BRUTMAN. If your wheel has gone shiny or you want a new look, we rewrap it in either one, in the factory look or your own colors. In our steering wheel configurator you can try both materials on a wheel like yours and see the price as you build it. A rewrap usually takes one business day once your leather or Alcantara is in the shop, and it comes with a written 3-year warranty on the leather and the stitching. Not in Florida? Take the wheel off and ship it to us, always without the airbag.
