02Sound familiar?

The signs owners send us photos of

Dashboards rarely fail all at once. These are the signs we see most, the most common first.

  1. Black dashboard leather lifted into a bubble near the windshield
    01

    Lifting and bubbles

The leather comes off the glue and lifts, most of all where the dashboard steps down or curves, and near the windshield.

  2. Dashboard leather pulled back from an air vent, with the yellow foam showing
    02

    Pulled out of the vents

The leather shrinks and slides out of the air vents and off the edges, often by 3 to 4 cm. The foam underneath shows.

  3. The leather over the gauges pulled away at its edge, with a gap underneath
    03

    Edges lifting

The leather pulls away at the seams, the vents or the edge of the instrument hood.

  4. A beige dashboard top dried out and cracked by the sun
    04

    Cracks and dry leather

Years of sun dry the leather out until the surface cracks.

  5. A glossy dashboard top reflecting in the windshield
    05

    Shine and glare

The top turns glossy and reflects on the windshield while you drive.

  6. A dark blue dashboard faded lighter on top by the sun
    06

    Faded color

UV fades the top, so it no longer matches the rest of your interior.

Every one of these has the same fix. New leather, matched to your car by catalog and laid the factory way, in 2 business days.

03Why it happens

Why dashboard leather bubbles and pulls back

Heat, shrinking leather and tired glue, all working together. A cut through the dashboard, from a seam to an air vent. It plays on its own, or press a step.

Diagram: a cut through the dashboard from a seam to an air vent. Heat dries the leather and it shrinks on its own. Tension builds inside it toward the seam, which is sewn tight. The tension tears the leather off the glue where the dashboard steps down, and pulls it out of the vent by 3 to 4 cm, leaving the foam bare. The glue stays on the foam. 150°F+ Seam sewn tight, does not move Tension in the leather 3 to 4 cm Tucked under the vent and glued Glue softens a little Torn off the glue Foam exposed LeatherGlueFoamBase Air vent
1. How it is built

A cut through the dashboard, from a seam to an air vent. The leather is glued over soft foam on a hard base. It is sewn tight at the seam, follows the step in the shape, and at the edge goes under the vent trim, which presses it in place.

Shrunken leather around the centreThe old leather had shrunk and wrinkled across the whole top. New black leather, laid tight around the centre opening, with a red stitch along the edge.

Down to the base, then new leatherThe old leather and the tired foam come off down to the base. Then new leather goes on the factory way, around the speaker and along every seam.

04What to do

How to fix a bubbling dashboard

Glue, a cover, a new dashboard or new leather. Here is honestly what each one gets you.

  • Glue it back

Cheap and quick, and usually temporary. Heat has shrunk the leather and tired the glue, so it is glued back under tension and lets go again the next summer. Glue can also stain or harden the leather.

  • A dash cover

Hides the problem from view. It does not stop the leather from shrinking and lifting underneath.

  • A new dashboard from the dealer

A whole new part, made to order. For a Lamborghini Urus that is $9,604 for the part alone, before anyone fits it.

  • Our way

    Re-trim in new leather

We keep your dashboard and replace only the leather, matched to your car, in 2 business days, with a written one-year warranty.

05Factory look

Back to factory, down to the feel

A re-trimmed dashboard should look, fit and feel as it did when it left the factory. These are the four things we get right, and what to check with any shop before you book.

  1. 01 / 04

    Leather matched by catalog

It starts with the leather. We choose it from leather makers' catalogs and pick the closest match to your car: the same shade, grain and thickness, so the new dashboard sits next to the rest of your interior as if it came with the car.

What to checkAsk any shop which leather they will use, and to see a sample next to your interior.

A leather maker's catalog of nappa swatches in white, ivory, blue, grey and black, each with its color name and number
  2. 02 / 04

    Factory stitch, to the millimetre

The stitching is the first thing the eye catches, and the first thing that gives away a cheap re-trim. We copy your car's own stitch: its length, the gap between the rows, the thread and even the slight slant of every stitch. The new seams sit next to the factory ones on your seats and doors, and nobody can tell which is which. Your car looks untouched. Just new.

What to checkLook at the stitching next to the seats and the doors. It should match, stitch for stitch.

  3. 03 / 04

    Airbag safety

Many dashboards hide an airbag behind the leather. We cut the new leather from the inside along the airbag door line, the way the factory does, so the airbag opens through it exactly as designed. From the outside you see nothing, and you drive knowing it works.

What to checkAlways ask how a shop handles the airbag line. Leather glued over it without this step can stop the airbag from opening properly.

  4. 04 / 04

The same feel under your hand

Press the top of a cheap re-trim and you feel it at once: hard as plastic, or soft and spongy. Under factory leather sits a springy padding that keeps its shape for years. We keep yours or lay the same material again, so the dashboard feels exactly as it did the day you bought the car. Not too soft, not too hard. Just right.

What to checkPress the top when you pick up the car. It should feel exactly like the day it was new.

07Questions

Dashboard repair questions

What owners ask us most before they book.

Can a bubbled dashboard be fixed without replacing it?

Yes. We keep your dashboard and replace only the leather on it, matched to your car. You do not need a new part from the dealer.

Why does my dashboard leather lift, bubble or pull back?

It is never just one thing. Behind the windshield the top of the dashboard gets hotter than 150°F, day after day. That heat dries the leather, so it shrinks a little every summer. The same heat ages the glue under it, so it holds a little less every year. And the seams stay where they are, so the shrinking leather pulls against them. Together they win: the leather lets go first where the dashboard curves or steps down, and pulls out of the air vents. New leather on fresh glue takes care of all three at once. The diagram above shows it step by step.

How long will you have my car?

2 business days for the new leather, plus 1 business day if we remove and install the dashboard. If we order your leather, the car stays with you until it arrives, usually 1 to 1.5 weeks. Then your exact drop-off and pickup dates go in writing, and if we miss the pickup date you get 5% off the labor for each business day, up to 20%.

Do I have to bring the car?

No. You can bring us the dashboard already out of the car, or we pick it up from you once your booking is confirmed. Or drive in, and we remove the dashboard and put it back for you, which adds one business day. Removal and installation start at $800 and are priced by make and model.

Can I ship my dashboard from another state?

Yes. Have the dashboard taken out, and the passenger airbag taken out of it: an airbag holds an explosive charge and must never go in a parcel, so it stays at your shop. Then ship the dashboard to us from anywhere in the US, or ask us to arrange the shipping. We re-trim it in 2 business days from the day after it arrives and send it back. Shipping is quoted in your estimate. Headliners, door panels and other interior parts can travel the same way.

Which cars do you work on?

Luxury and exotic cars: Lamborghini, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, McLaren, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG, BMW, Range Rover and more. Send photos of yours and we tell you what it takes.

Do you work with dealers?

Yes. We re-trim dashboards for dealerships and other shops, one at a time or on a regular schedule, in the factory look. See how we work with dealers.

Is a re-trim as good as a new dashboard from the dealer?

It looks and feels the same. We choose the leather from the leather makers' catalogs to match your car, copy the factory stitch and keep the padding underneath, so the dashboard looks as it did on the day it was made. You keep your own dashboard, you skip the wait for a new part, and you get a written one-year warranty.

Will the new leather match the rest of my interior?

That is the whole job. We match the shade, the grain, the thread and the stitch to your exact car, and we check the finished dashboard against the rest of the interior.

Can I just glue the leather back?

You can, but it rarely lasts, because old glue is only part of the problem. The leather has shrunk, so it only reaches when it is stretched hard, and the glue holds it under constant pull. The next hot summer usually tears it off again, and glue can stain or harden the leather.

Will it lift or pull back again?

We clean the base down, replace tired foam and bond the new leather with an adhesive made for high heat. Use a sunshade and it will stay flat and in place for years. Every job comes with a written one-year warranty.

Can I change the color or add stitching?

Yes. Keep the factory look, or go for a new color, contrast stitching or Alcantara. We build it to the same standard.

How do you reupholster a dashboard?

We take the dashboard out of the car and strip the old leather down to the base. Where the foam under it has gone soft or crumbly, we replace it. New leather, matched to your car, is cut and sewn to the pattern of your dashboard and laid on the factory way, with the airbag line cut from the inside. Then the dashboard goes back in, and every vent, sensor and trim piece is checked.

Can my dashboard be done in Alcantara?

Yes. Alcantara is matte, so it does not reflect in the windshield, and it suits sporty and luxury cars. Leather is the classic, factory choice. Leather, Alcantara or vinyl: how each handles the Florida sun.

How do I keep the new leather from shrinking?

Heat is the main enemy. A windshield sunshade, a good tint and parking in the shade when you can make the biggest difference, with a leather conditioner a few times a year. Our guide to protecting a dashboard in the Florida sun.

How much does dashboard reupholstery cost?

See the typical jobs above. Your exact price depends on the car and the dashboard, so send a few photos and our manager sends your price within 1 hour during business hours. That price is final: it does not change without your OK.
