02Color picker

Pick two colors. We add the third.

The main color covers the seats, about 60 percent of what you see. The accent goes in the centers and inserts, about 30. The third color is the last 10: the thread, the piping, the zero mark on the wheel.

A quiet Platinum line frames the Red without competing with it, the way bespoke makers finish two-color cabins. Timeless: a light grey line has finished luxury cabins for decades and does not date.

03Red interiors

Red car interior ideas

Red is one of the interior colors people search for most on a G-Wagon, an Urus or a Rolls-Royce. Four ways to wear it, from loud to quiet. Try any of them on the seat above.

  • Black and red

Black bolsters, red centers and a light grey thread. The sports classic: red is among Ferrari's most-requested leathers, and Mercedes has built G-Class editions in black nappa with red stitching.

  • Grey and red

Graphite instead of black softens the red, so the cabin looks sporty without shouting. A light grey thread keeps the lines crisp.

  • Bordeaux and black

A deep wine red with black. It reads calmer than bright red, and it is the red on the rise: BASF's newest car color collection turns to warmer reds and browns.

  • Just a red line

Black and grey seats with red only in the thread and piping. It is the lightest way to have a red interior and the most current one: Rolls-Royce describes "dark, neutral tones with bold strokes of colour".

05The science

Why the third color works

The picker follows four ideas from color science. Here they are in plain words.

  1. 01

    Same family

A deeper or lighter tone of your color adds depth without adding a new color: a wine red thread on red leather, a cognac thread on espresso. The eye reads one color with more depth.

  2. 02

    Opposites, in a thin line

Colors across the wheel, like navy and tan or green and cognac, make each other look richer. In big areas they fight, so the opposite goes in the thread, not across the seat.

  3. 03

    Light against dark

Two dark leathers hide every seam, and a light thread draws them. The picker measures this as a light contrast ratio, with the same formula web designers use to check that text is easy to read.

  4. 04

    Neighbors change each other

In the 1820s the chemist Michel-Eugène Chevreul looked into complaints about dyed cloth at the Gobelins tapestry works in Paris. The dye was fine: a color seems to change when the colors next to it change. The same grey thread looks lighter on black than on ivory, so judge a thread on the leather it will sit on.

07Questions

Questions about interior colors

Short, honest answers. Anything else: send a photo and ask.

What is the best color combination for a car interior?

The combinations that last use one main color for about 60 percent of what you see, an accent for about 30 and a third color in the thread and piping for the last 10. Black and red, black and ivory, navy and tan, and espresso and cognac all follow that rule. Try yours in the picker on this page: it shows the third color and why it works.

What color stitching goes with a red interior?

With black and red, a light grey thread frames the red without fighting it; Porsche pairs its Bordeaux Red leather with a light grey for the same reason. Graphite is the quieter choice, and a deeper red like Bordeaux adds depth without a new color.

Is a red interior a good choice for a luxury car?

Red has been a luxury classic for decades: it is among Ferrari's most-requested leathers, and Mercedes has built G-Class editions in black and red. For red without the shout, keep it in the seat centers, or only in the thread and piping.

What car interior colors are in style for 2026?

Warm browns lead: earth tones topped a 2025 survey of car designers, and a rich brown is the key color in BASF's newest car palette for the Americas. Greens, deeper reds like Bordeaux and orange accents are rising too. Black, navy, ivory and red stay timeless. The all-grey cabin is fading.

Do light leather seats get dirty faster?

They show it more. Lexus engineers traced the blue-grey marks on light seats to the indigo in jeans, right where the driver slides in. On a two-tone seat the bolster you slide over takes most of it, so a darker bolster hides it best. More on light and dark leather in our G-Wagon interior colors guide.
